12 O'Clock Track: Nones, "Defecating Grey"

All it took was going to Austin to discover my new favorite band in Chicago. I got home from SXSW very early Tuesday morning, having played 12 shows on the trip with my band Heavy Times, three of them on the same bill as Nones. I wish more had been—I'm seriously kicking myself for sleeping on this band for so long. Today's 12 O'Clock Track is "Defecating Grey," a two-minute slice of Flipper worship from Nones' HoZac Hookup Klub seven-inch.

Nones—a band of three girls fronted by a gnarly dude—play spazzy, dissonant noise punk with psychedelic frills. Lead singer, saxophonist, and contortionist Brandon Bayles has a crude delivery, and onstage he's a bit of an exhibitionist (one night he told us about the inner conflict he'd experienced about taking his dick out at a show he knew his mother would be attending that week). His stage presence provides what you might diplomatically describe as an interesting counterpoint to the three cute girls ripping it up behind him.

"Defecating Grey" is a perfect introduction to the band. It's loud and gross, its unsettling groove punctuated by atonal saxophone blasts and echoing vocal yelps. My favorite thing about Nones is drummer Sara Jean, who has one of the most brilliantly primitive approaches to the kit I've seen or heard in a long time.

Nones share the stage with Feedtime and Relay Beken at the Empty Bottle on Tue 3/27. Their seven-inch EP is available via HoZac Records.
