One of the city's best film events, the European Union Film Festival, opens Friday and runs through March 29 at Gene Siskel Film Center. More EU titles screen every year than we can possibly review (there are 65 in this year's edition), but we've made a running start with the eight features covered in this week's sidebar. Also this week, we have new reviews of Bullhead, a Belgian noir about skulduggery in the cattle business; The Hunter, an Iranian drama set amid the election protests of 2009; Kati With an I, a portrait of a 18-year-old high school senior in Alabama; The Lorax, a children's animation adapted from the eco-fantasy by Dr. Seuss; Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar Movie, featuring cable TV comics Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim; and Undefeated, a high school football documentary that just walked off with an Oscar.

Best bets for repertory this week include Joseph L. Mankiewicz's The Barefoot Contessa (1956), Tuesday at University of Chicago Doc Films; Clair Denis' Beau Travail (1999), Tuesday at Film Center with a lecture by Daniel Eisenberg; Edward Dmytryk's Christ in Concrete (1949), Wednesday at the Portage theater, presented by Northwest Chicago Film Society; Wes Anderson's The Darjeeling Limited (2007), Friday at Doc; Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket (1987), midnight Friday and Saturday at Music Box; Elaine May's Mikey and Nicky (1976), Friday at Northwestern University Block Museum of Art; Michael Hazanavicius's OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies (2006), starring Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo of The Artist, midnight Friday and Saturday at Music Box; and Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven (1992), Wednesday at Doc.

Some special events you should know about: the Chicago Irish Film Festival runs Friday through Wednesday at Beverly Arts Center; Rendez-Vous With French Cinema, a series of new French releases, opens today at the Wilmette and runs through March 11; and the University of Chicago's popular Pictures and Sounds program, with pop bands accompanying experimental work from the 50s and 60s, takes place Saturday (it's sold out, but a waiting list will be started at the door one half hour prior to the show).
