Home field advantage

As expected, President Obama's State of the Union address Tuesday got heavy applause from Democrats and polite applause from Republicans.

When I saw the video below, posted last week on YouTube, it made me wish he'd been able to give the address at Saint Columbanus. The clip shows a visit by a relaxed Obama and his family to the south-side grammar school in November 2008, when Obama was president-elect.

The longest applause during Tuesday's speech, 36 seconds, came when the president said "Above all, our freedom endures because of the men and women in uniform who defend it."

Of many exuberant responses at Saint Columbanus, perhaps the loudest came when the president said: "If you guys read and do your math, and listen to your teachers, be good to your parents, and treat each other with respect, there's nothing you can't do. You guys might even end up being the president some day."

Democrat or Republican, I think you'll enjoy the enthusiasm in this clip.
