Earlier this year painter Eric Fischl, who once worked as a guard at the Museum of Contemporary Art, inaugurated the project America: Now and Here, a mobile exhibit of work by visual artists, poets, filmmakers, musicians, and playwrights that Fischl hopes will “build a dialogue” around the theme embedded in the show’s title. Currently contained in a full-size tractor trailer, the exhibit launched in Kansas City, Missouri; it’s been in Chicago since last week, and there are a few chances left to catch it in one city parking lot or another. Tuesday it sits from 8 AM till 5 PM outside the Smart Museum of Art (5550 S. Greenwood), with interior viewing hours from 11 AM to 1 PM, and Wednesday the truck heads to the Hyde Park Art Center (5020 S. Cornell), where it sits from 8 AM to 9 PM. The truck’s exterior is enwrapped with work by conceptual artist Barbara Kruger, and the list of other participants in the project is formidable: Laurie Anderson, Edward Albee, Adrienne Rich, Joan Baez, Jeff Koons, and Philip Glass are a few. Next year the project gets bigger: Fischl plans to expand to six trucks. For more, see the America: Now and Here website, or this profile of Fischl published earlier this year in the New York Times.
