Who benefits from tax-free arts philanthropy?

The major beneficiaries of foundation support for the arts are big-budget institutions with fat-cat audiences, according to a new report from the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy.

Fifty-five percent of foundation arts grants go to the less than 2 percent of arts organizations with annual budgets of more than $5 million, the report says, while "recent research demonstrates that the primary audience of these large institutions is predominantly white and upper-income."
