"Mrs. Schmidt?"

So said the caller who'd interrupted me in my doings earlier during this sunny day on a holiday weekend. I realize it's a relatively minor kvetch, but I'm neither married nor my mother, and you'd think people would be more aware of certain protocols by now—especially those who are trying to make a living by selling strangers stuff by phone.

"Um, I don't think you should automatically refer to women by that title these days," I said somewhat crabbily. (If I'd really wanted to be an asshole I would have said, "Don't you mean Dr. Schmidt?")

"Oh, I'm sorry, Miss Schmidt. I'm calling from the Lyric Opera, and . . . "

My season tickets arrived a couple weeks ago.
