Nerd alert: How Spotify works

Recently the much-hyped streaming music service Spotify made its stateside debut after a long period of being strictly for the Europeans. I've been using it and it's pretty great. It's perhaps not the music-industry salvation that some of the company's more ardent supporters made it out to be, and there were certainly some questionable choices made while its interface was being designed, but it's definitely worth the ten bucks a month, especially if you feel kind of skeevy about getting all your music off of Mediafire. Which you should.

Anyhow you've probably already heard of Spotify by now. But have you heard how it works? Apparently the music's not streamed from Spotify's servers so much as it is from other users' hard drives via P2P network, sort of like if you were downloading the music through Limewire or BitTorrent but you didn't keep the file afterward. It's pretty interesting!

I mean, if you think this is sort of fascinating you're probably a super huge nerd, but maybe you also don't care whether people think you're a nerd or what they might think if they knew that you've read the entire six-book Dune series three times in the past ten years, to use a maybe not completely hypothetical example.
