Show us your ... pig collection

Each week we ask you to show us something. This week it's Gary Bartholomew's PIG COLLECTION. Got something to show us?

  • Gary Bartholomew

Bartholomew started collecting pig memorabilia when he was six years old, after his mother told him that pigs symbolized good luck. She'd learned about pigs' purported magical properties as a young girl, he says; the band of gypsies who camped out on her parents' farm in Ohio during the summers had painted pigs on their wagons to protect them on the road.

A retired ad director, Bartholomew says his passion for the porcine influenced some of his animated storyboards for Allstate, Kellogg's, and other former clients. He estimates his collection includes more than 2,500 specimens, which crowd most of the flat surfaces of the Wilmette home he shares with his "tolerant" wife, Nancy. Though he still likes to hit up neighborhood garage and estate sales in search of new finds, these days he does most of his collecting online.

Bartholomew isn't sure what's driven his obsession all these years, but thinks it's "probably" the memory of his mother. "Most people outgrow this sort of thing," he says. "I just never did."
