On Getting Up and Going

Friends of Anne Keegan gathered Sunday in the large backyard of the old house on North Paulina Street that she and Leonard Aronson made their home for close to 40 years to say goodbye to her. The sun shone, winds gusted, and rain fell and passed over, a weather offering appropriate to the occasion. Anne — though I realized listening to the speakers that she was "Keegan" to everyone but perhaps the stray great-aunt — died last week, and a strong case can be made that she was what Rick Kogan called her in his Tribune obit, "Arguably the best female reporter/writer in the history of Chicago journalism."

Fortunately, Keegan got to say a goodbye of her own. Her friend Steve Crews read a poem she wrote last September, when she was far from well, "Taking a Walk."

I think I need to get up and take a walk.
But where to go?

Do I go back where I've been so very happy
Or
Do I head out to places I do not yet know?

Do I need the adventure of guess —
Or
Will I find comfort in where I've been and learn less?

I think I need to get up and take a walk.
But where to go?

Do I proceed thru a mist when I cannot see?

Do I still
Climb the mountain or find an easier path down the hill?

Do I cower when there is lightning?
Do I trudge through the storm?

Can I endure the cut of wind
Or
Suffer a burning warm?
Do I venture out, peering left and right?

Do I walk with heads-up courage
Or move with cautious fright?
Do I walk only by day
Or
Tromp on thru night?

Do I need to know where I am going at all?
Did I ever?

I think I need to get up and take a walk!
Want to come?
