On the instructions of his sister Catherine, 19-year-old Andrew Suh shot to death Catherine's fiancé Robert O'Dubaine in their Bucktown garage in 1993. Andrew refused to testify on his own behalf, apparently to protect Catherine. He was convicted of murder and sentenced to 100 years at Pontiac Correctional Center, later reduced to 80. Catherine was sentenced to life without parole.

Iris Shim was an 18-year-old student at the University of Illinois-Chicago in 2000 when she befriended Andrew through the youth group she led at Korean Martyrs' Catholic Church. Her prison visits evolved into the documentary The House of Suh, featuring extensive interviews with Andrew and others close to the case—an effort to understand the twisted family bonds that would lead a promising young man to take another's life. The House of Suh screens in the 16th annual Asian American Showcase, Saturday 4/9 at 6 PM and Wednesday 4/13 at 8:15 PM, at the Gene Siskel Film Center, 164 N. State St. Shim and producer Gerry Kim will hold Q&A after.
