Well, they’ve finally done it!

Advocates in Detroit have raised more than $50,000 for a statue of cyborg-crimefighter Robocop. A worthy civic venture, indeed.

It makes you wonder what kind of monument to pop culture we could build here in Chicago.

A statue of Rookie of the Year Henry Rowengartner might look great alongside Billy Williams, Ernie Banks, and Harry Caray outside Wrigley Field.

Perhaps Jake and Elwood racing across Daley Plaza, or Batman sitting atop the Tribune Tower like a gargoyle. Better yet, something to honor the civic contributions of the cast of The Chicago Code, My Boys, or Family Matters. Yes, yes, an Urkel statue would be a fine addition to Navy Pier.

There really are very few — if any - monuments to Chicago’s place in pop culture. Sure, there’s a Blues Brothers statue at Midway, and Harry Caray became a staple of Saturday Night Live with Will Ferrell’s bobble-headed impression. And of course there’s Buddy Guy’s Legends, an institution itself.

But what else? Chicago is abound with statues and monuments to our history, whether it’s the sculptures on the Michigan Avenue Bridge, a tribute to nuclear science breakthroughs at the University of Chicago, or the Memory to the Fallen 21 work, which honors the Chicago firefighters who died in the 1910 stockyards blaze.

Surely Chicago has contributed enough to this country’s pop culture. We might just have to settle for something less than a bionic policeman.
