A national coffee expo, a local food film screening, a Texas barbecue dinner, and more.

West Town flower shop Stems hosts a tasting to educate consumers on pairing tea with foods like cheese and jam. It kicks off the series Chicago Tea Tastings, sponsored by Liif Tea, Kissel’s Spiced Jam, and the Great American Cheese Collection. 6:30-8:30 PM, Stems, 850 N. Ashland, 312-243-4470.

Some of the java minutiae in the nationally touring expo Coffee Fest, which alights this weekend at Navy Pier: a workshop on single-cup extraction brewing, an “aroma challenge” with prizes for the most finely tuned noses, a showcase of new brewing products and coffee varieties, a latte art championship, and more. 2/18-2/20: Fri-Sat noon-5 PM, Sun noon-4 PM, Navy Pier, 600 E. Alpana Singh, of Check, Please! fame, headlines an eight-course champagne brunch incorporating food sold by vendors at the Chicago French Market—dishes include raw vegan lasagna from Raw, pastrami on rye from Fumare, croque monsieur from LM, and macaroons from Delightful Pastries. Tickets to Polar Beer Fest, Rock Bottom’s celebration of strong winter ales, cover beer options like Destihl Triton Barley Wine, Emmett’s Russian Imperial Stout, and Half Acre Thunder & Son Brown Ale, plus a mug to drink from and light hors d’oeuvres. Logan Square Kitchen hosts a screening of Robert Bates’ new documentary Ingredients, which profiles farmers, chefs, and others involved in local food activism throughout the country. Admission includes a sampling of “naanwiches” from Matt Maroni’s Gaztro-Wagon food truck, as well as a panel discussion with local farmers and chefs. The event is cosponsored by Local Food Wisdom, whose founder, Jim Javenkoski, presents this screening. 6:30 PM, Logan Square Kitchen, 2333 N. Milwaukee, 773-342-2333, $25.

Five items from a proud Texas culinary tradition—armadillo eggs, sausage, barbecued brisket, beef ribs, and peach cobbler—are paired with beer from Michigan-based brewery Founders at tonight’s Texas BBQ Dinner.
