Wild Things

Once the province of well-off ladies of a certain age, animal jewelry is big—and not just in a gothy, snake-bangle-around-your-upper-arm way. There's a definite appeal to pieces that straddle the line between bad taste and really cool. Plus, the luxurious, new-money look of animal jewelry fits in perfectly with the contradictions inherent in high-low style. Though I suppose a gold and pavé diamond panther necklace ($2850 by Sydney Evan) could invite a slew of cougar jokes.

Owls are a perennial favorite—something about those eyes! This version from Asos.com comes at the affordable price of $14.34.

You don't have to have taut biceps or channel your inner Cleopatra to go the snake route—several companies make the reptiles downright sweet and charming, as in a bracelet by Calypso St. Barth, $95.
