James Meeks, lamenting the tremendous disadvantages the pastor of a massive and politically influential church* faces in running for office:

"If homosexuals can endorse a candidate, why can't a church?" Meeks asked in his sermon last Sunday, days after he voted against a same-sex civil union law that the General Assembly passed.

Before you judge him, I'm sure there are gay-bar owners who don't like paying taxes.

* Cf. Mick Dumke's 2007 Reader cover story "The Church of Clout," an excellent introduction to Meeks, his church, and his political history.
