An alien he meets deep underground grants a coal miner (Emil Jannings) a source of limitless energy, which the miner uses to set himself up as a world dominating literal power broken in Algol: Tragödie der Macht.

Hans Werckmeister's 1920 silent German expressionist sci-fi features sets by Walter Reimann (The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari).

Algol screens Thursday, Dec. 9 at 6 p.m. at Goethe-Institut, 150 N. Michigan Ave., Suite 200.
