New York Times, April 23, 1887. As Salvation Army-baiting goes, this is pretty elaborate: The standard of industry was just to pelt them with rocks or eggs or rotten fruit or snowballs or whatever other projectiles were in surplus stock. But that punchline—"They have given up [place name here] as beyond redemption"—was a well-worn trope.
