The Reader's Guide to Halloween lists all the horror movies playing this week, but here are the highlights by night.

The Soviet silent sci-fi epic Aelita; Queen of Mars (1924) screens at 8 PM at Rockefeller Memorial Chapel, with live organ accompaniment by Jay Warren. And Facets Cinematheque presents the German gorefest Nekromantic (1989) as part of its Facets Fright School lecture series at 11:55 PM.

The James Whale/Boris Karloff classic Frankenstein (1931) screens at noon at the Wilmette. George A. Romero's teen vampire shocker Martin, subject of this week's Critic's Choice, shows at 7 and 9 at Doc Films. Bank of America Cinema has a double feature of psycho thrillers with the inimitable Peter Lorre, Mad Love (1935) and The Face Behind the Mask (1941); showtime at 8 PM. Later on, Facets Cinematheque presents Jean Epstein's silent The Fall of the House of Usher (1924) with live musical accompaniment by Cursed Bird Ensemble.

Wilmette digs up another relic with the creepy John Barrymore version of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde (1921), screening at 2 PM. Doc presents one last screening of Martin at 3 PM. And the Lon Chaney version of Phantom of the Opera (1925) screens at 3 PM downtown at Saint James Cathedral, with live organ accompaniment by Mark Herman.
