Washington Post, October 31, 1932.This masks-at-the-window thing was a Halloween-time staple of editorial cartoonists (for another example see below). I haven't been able to determine whether it actually refers to a common prank. I don't know what those peg-like objects apparently piercing the donkey's ears are.

Aberdeen Weekly News, November 3, 1921. Resurgent monarchy turned out not to be the pressing political menace brewing in Europe at the time. Miss Europa sure does look like a dude though.
