A pie contest, a vegan festival, a German buffet, and more.

Uncommon Ground serves a four-course meal paired with beer from Cleveland-based Great Lakes Brewing Company. Dishes include grilled ancho-marinated shrimp, paired with Eliot Ness Amber Lager, and spinach and bacon gnocchi carbonara with Burning River Pale Ale. In addition to vendors like Chicago Diner and Soul Vegetarian East, the one-day festival Chicago VeganMania features vegan art, music, apparel, chef demos, and speakers like Carol J. Adams, author of The Sexual Politics of Meat: A Feminist-Vegetarian Critical Theory. 10 AM-6 PM, Pulaski Park Fieldhouse, 1419 W. Blackhawk.

Rock Bottom Brewery offers its own version of Oktoberfest—that’d be Rocktoberfest—at which guests receive a free 16-ounce beer stein for the several German-style brews that’ll be sampled. Take a bus from City Provisions Deli to Spence Farm for Crop Mob, where attendees will spend the day harvesting corn and sorghum. Lunch is provided; there's more information here. 9 AM-7 PM, 1818 W. Wilson, $20 suggested donation.

Organizers expect about 140 contestants for the sixth annual Bucktown Apple Pie Contest, which also includes a silent auction and square dancing. Pastry chef Gale Gand is this year's lead judge. 2-5 PM, Holstein Park, 2200 N. Oakley, 312-742-7554.

Global Grazing, a fund-raiser for southwest-side CPS charter school the Academy for Global Citizenship, takes place in the school's garden and features dishes from local chefs like Paul Kahan, Bill Kim, and Stephanie Izard. Buy tickets here. 3-7 PM, 4647 W. 47th, $40.
