State senator Rev. James Meeks is considering a run for mayor, even sitting down with John Kass to talk about the possibility. For a refresher, Mick Dumke's 2007 story "The Church of Clout" looks at Meeks's background and his politically influential congregation. Whether or not he runs, his church's ability to register voters could be a factor: "No other institution or organization in Cook County has more people trained and authorized to register voters: this past fall Salem had 2,308 registrars; Operation PUSH was next, with 1,537."
