Building on its summer liquor series Secret Spirits Society, the Palmer House Hilton’s Potter’s Lounge inaugurates a monthlong Brewmaster Tasting Series. Starting tonight with a look at Louisiana's Abita Brewing Company, each class includes a guided tasting of a featured brewery’s products. Food vendors at Taste of Polonia Kasia’s Deli, Sami Swoi Restaurant, and River Grove's ToTu Cafe. The fest also features Polish and American bands, Polish beer, arcade games, and folk dancing. After a Distillery Tour that includes samples of spelt whiskey, rye vodka, and pear brandy, among others, Meg Bell of Koval Distillery leads guests on a walk through Andersonville to In Fine Spirits for more tastings. The menu at Corner CooksLabor Day Lobster Boil includes the Maine-sourced crustacean and sides like potatoes, sweet corn, and tomato and frizzled leek salad; dessert is ice cream sundaes. Inspiration Corporation, the beneficiary of tonight's Taste of Inspiration, fights homelessness through food service: its several Chicago-area cafes combine nourishment with job training, supportive services, and case management. This fund-raiser features beer, wine, and hors d’oeuvres such as smoked salmon toasts, roasted potatoes with duck confit, puff pastry-wrapped asparagus, and more. Green City Market kicks off its annual Locavore Challenge, during which participants are encouraged to focus their diets on what’s available in the local foodshed (Illinois, bordering states, and Michigan). Kits with information about eating local are already available at the market and on the website; events during the challenge include a GCM Locavore Fair (9/11), Locavore Chef Challenge (9/18), and a concluding dinner at the Peggy Notabaert Nature Museum (9/22).
