Albert Schweitzer and Jerome Hill
  • Albert Schweitzer and Jerome Hill

Documentarian Jerome Hill spent six years following Alsatian Nobel Prize winner Albert Schweitzer's work at his clinic in Lamberéné, French Equatorial Africa (now Gabon).

Narrated by Burgess Meredith and Fredric March, Hill's film Albert Schweitzer won the 1957 Academy Award for best documentary.

In 1965, Hill revisited the doctor in the short Schweitzer and Bach, exploring Schweitzer's avocation as a scholar and interpreter of the composer.

The two films screen Wednesday at 7 p.m. at University of Chicago DOC Films, Ida Noyes Hall, 1212 E 59th St. $5.
