Rumor has it that eight aldermen might follow Helen Schiller's lead and step down before next year's elections. Walter Jacobson says the same about Mayor Daley. Even the mayor's spin is desultory these days. Mick Dumke writes:

In a novel twist, Daley also claimed credit for drafting a new ordinance allowing the legal registration of handguns in Chicago, even though he didn’t do so until after a U.S. Supreme Court ruling effectively ended the city’s handgun ban.

“I understand some Chicagoans want to be able to keep guns in the home, and I listened to them,” he said.

Actually, Justice Stevens dissented.

Perhaps it's just summer doldrums. August is the bizarrest month, as someone who wasn't T.S. Eliot said.
