One of my favorite writers on one of my favorite editors. While it may seem like inside baseball, the post explains a lot, I think, about why it's hard to find good editors. Most of them are high-profile in name only; the details of their actual work are obscure, known only to writers and colleagues, and can really only be judged by an audience in aggregate over a long period of time.
