Lou Piniella has announced he's retiring at the end of the year; it's been a (typically) difficult season for the Cubs, but as the Sun-Times points out, he's "the first Cubs manager in more than 70 years to post a record of .500 or better in each of his first three seasons leading the club." With Piniella leaving, speculation inevitably turns to Ryne Sandberg, who Ted Cox profiled in 2007; ever since he came out of retirement to coach the Cubs' A team in Peoria, he's had his eyes on the majors.
