French style is the ultimate go-to story idea for American fashion magazines. Throw together a striped shirt, some ballet flats, and an Hermes scarf and you're practically guaranteed to have readers salivating over the images. But they wouldn't keep going back to this eternal theme if it didn't work: this month online shopping site Net-a-Porter's "magazine" focuses on Paris and Saint-Tropez, and if the images don't have you yearning to book a ticket to la belle France, you're less easily manipulated than I am.

In fact, the spread shows how simple it is to get this look—no need to spend thousands of dollars on designer gear (unless you want to). Striped shirts are everywhere this season, and surely most women have a pair of skinny jeans somewhere. Add a blazer and those ballet flats, and voila—you're done. The Bardot look is also a breeze—T-shirt + short skirt + vintage leopard-print jacket. Most fashion-minded ladies have at least two out of three. And that's the true secret to French style: working with what you have.
