One in a parade of summer ribfests, Naperville Ribfest features over a dozen vendors and, on Sunday, rib judging with special guest Steve Dolinsky. Thursday and Friday between noon and 4 PM, admission is $10, there are unlimited carnival rides, and participating vendors knock $3 off half slabs. Headlining musical acts include LeAnn Rimes and Sammy Hagar. a Through Sun 7/4, noon-10 PM, Knoch Park, 724 S. West, Naperville, 630-779-2702, $12, $9 advance, free for kids under 12.

At Chicago French Market’s Fourth of July celebration, hot dogs are $2, there's face painting and balloon animals from 11 AM to 1 PM, and Don Reitsma plays “patriotic tunes” from 2 to 5 PM. 11 AM-5 PM, 131 N. Clinton, 312-575-0306.


The Fountainhead hosts a cask night for Metropolitan Brewing's dry-hopped Flywheel and Two Brothers Hop Juice; firkins will be tapped at 7 PM. 6-10 PM, 1970 W. Montrose, 773-697-8204.


Former New York Times restaurant critic Frank Bruni discusses his memoir, Born Round: The Secret History of a Full-Time Eater; he'll be introduced by Trib reporter Monica Eng and will answer questions and sign books after the talk. 6 PM, Museum of Contemporary Art, 220 E. The Southern’s Cary Taylor prepares a three-course dinner that’s, well, southern: choices include buttermilk-soaked chicken, pork braised in apple cider and herbs, shrimp and grits, and Mississippi mud cake. Tickets to the meal, which is served on the restaurant’s covered rooftop deck, include a passed appetizer and two drinks. 6 PM, 1840 W. North, 708-383-7543, $72.
