Scenes From the BP Protest

While Blackhawks fans and hangers-on whooped it up parade-style downtown, a group of about 100 people occupied a spot in Grant Park in silent protest against BP—directors of "Pirates of the Caribbean, Part BP: Oily Fucking Nightmare," this year's most depressing summer blockbuster. The protesters had planned to occupy the BP pedestrian bridge, the Frank Gehry-designed connector between the Pritzker Pavilion and Bicentennial Plaza across Columbus Drive. Security was deployed to keep them off the bridge, so folks sat down on the sidewalk and held opened black umbrellas—turning themselves into a sheet of black, just like the layer of crude now polluting the gulf. "We’re mighty proud of our hockey team, but that doesn’t change the reality of the oil spill," organizers wrote on the event's Facebook page.

On the way back to the office, I did catch one shot of the hockeyfest—this zentai-suited man, who was posing for pics with passersby.
