Abu Jandal in The Oath

  • Abu Jandal in "The Oath"

Salim Hamdan was Osama Bin Laden's driver, who spent seven years as a prisoner at Guantanamo Bay and was the first suspect to face the post-9/11 military tribunals.

Hamdan's brother-in-law Abu Jandal was Bin Laden's bodyguard and is now free and driving a cab in Sana'a, Yemen, where he runs a support organization for former Al Qaeda operatives.

Laura Poitras (My Country, My Country) contrasts the two men's divergent paths since their first meeting in 1996 in her documentary The Oath.

Poitros never got to film Hamdan—he's represented through his letters from prison. But she spent a lot of time with Jandal in Yemen, complicated by her being on a government watch list, she says—an assertion the government neither confirms nor denies.

The Oath is the opening night film of the Human Rights Watch International Film Festival, a touring festival presented by the international activist group.

It screens Thursday 6/3 at the Museum of Contemporary Art, 220 E. Chicago Ave. Reception at 5:30 p.m., screening at 6:30. Poitras will speak after the screening along with Human Rights Watch terrorism/counterterrorism director Joanne Mariner. Tickets start at $75.

The festival continues through Thursday, 6/10 at Facets Cinematheque, 1517 W. Fullerton Ave.
