Summer in Genoa

Rodrigo Garcia, who wrote and directed the excellent Nine Lives (2005), scales down to three lives (and change) for his latest feature, Mother and Child, the subject of this week's long review. We also have a Critic's Choice for Michael Winterbottom's Summer in Genoa, starring Colin Firth, Catherine Keener, and Hope Davis.

New movies reviewed this week include Beyond the Years, Im Kwon-taek's sequel to his 1993 hit Sopyonje; Princess Kaiulani, a biopic of the 18th-century Hawaiian princess; Robin Hood, with Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett as Robin and Marion; The Shock Doctrine, Winterbottom's screen adaptation of the best-selling political book by Naomi Klein; and Shooting Robert King, a documentary about the eponymous war-zone photojournalist.

Best repertory screenings this week: Robert Bresson's Au Hasard Balthasar (1966), next Thursday at Block Films; Agnes Varda's The Gleaners and I, screening by DVD projection at Transistor, 5045 N. Clark (see Jonathan Rosenbaum's long review here); Anthony Mann's Man of the West (1958) on Wednesday at Northbrook Public Library; Haskell Wexler's Medium Cool (1969), introduced by the filmmaker next Thursday at University of Chicago Film Studies Center; and Akira Kurosawa's Throne of Blood (1957), Saturday and Thursday night at Gene Siskel Film Center.
