Todd Carter, a longtime member of the fine local experimental trio TV Pow, is in the process of digitizing the massive collection of Sun Ra recordings, including more than 700 reel-to-reel tapes, in Experimental Sound Studio's Creative Audio Archive. I'm sure there's tons of fascinating stuff buried in there (and tons of tedious stuff too), and Carter has been sifting through it all. Tonight at Heaven Gallery he's sharing some of his discoveries in a live multichannel piece he's calling 2010: Digital Black of Sun Ra Pt. II.

Carter tells me that everything he's using is from the CAA collection, but both the collection and his piece include plenty of material that doesn't feature Ra himself, including hypnosis tapes, recordings of television and radio broadcasts, answering machine messages, and language instruction tapes. Carter says he has an outline for the performance mapped out, but most of the details will be decided spontaneously.

A few months ago I posted about a new experimental-music festival called Neon Marshmallow, scheduled for August at the Viaduct Theater, and judging from the handful of confirmed performers at the time it looked promising. Well, today the organizers unveiled the full lineup, which includes more than a dozen acts each day from Thursday, August 19, through Sunday, August 22 (including Carter's band TV Pow).

The festival clearly leans toward the DIY noise underground, and to be honest, I'm not familiar with many of the names. But there's a lot of stuff I'm pretty excited about—Greg Kelley, Keith Fullerton Whitman, Bhob Rainey, Carlos Giffoni, Emeralds, Noveller, Jason Lescalleet, and Excepter, among others. Unfact, a new solo project by Jesus Lizard bassist Dave Sims, is playing twice—and one of those sets is in collaboration with Noveller, the excellent musical project of New York filmmaker Sarah Lipstate.

Today's playlist:

Air, Love 2 (Astralwerks)
Armando Garzón y Los Gaunches, Danzon (Corason)
Bull of the Year, Four Horns (AIM)
John Luther Adams, Red Arc/Blue Veil (Code Blue)
Various artists, Riba Dempel: Popular Dance Music of Curaçao 1950-1954 (Otrabanda)
