  • The designer with models

For fashion designers, part of the challenge of being known for a particular sort of clothing is how to make your line look fresh every season. This year is Chicago designer Lara Miller's fifth in business, and watching models display her spring 2010 collection on Friday night, I was drawn less to her signature modular and changeable knits than to the more static pieces, like cigarette pants, short jackets, and pencil skirts in summery stripes. However, mixed in with the wrap dresses and cardigans were exciting innovations on her usual themes.

A knit dress with a deep, twisted V-neck conveyed a smoky noir ambience, and a cheekily short long-sleeved number with a vertical panel of a checkered pattern down the front looked like something a Bright Young Thing would wear to midnight tennis. Also striking: a beige version of her alterable multidress with a vegan silk organza skirt, evoking gossamer ballerina dreams. In fact, Miller's collection fits right in with the current craze of layering thick and thin layers, another dancers' trademark.
