In general I'm not a fan of shorts; they're too easily abused. As much as a large proportion of the population would like to think so, shorts with a battered T-shirt and flip-flops are not an acceptable outfit in public, except maybe on the playground.

But dressed up, they can even go to work. Longer versions, like the Bermuda-style short, are back in style, perhaps because they flatter more body types than short shorts (however cute they may be).

Just make sure to think "dressy casual," not "obvious tourists wandering Michigan Avenue." That could mean a striped top or ruffles to counterbalance the sportiness of the shorts, maybe paired with a jacket or cardigan. Try them with heels and tights to carry you through the chilly spring weather. Flats can work too, but if you're short make sure they have at least a bit of a heel so you don't look stumpy.

Oh, and there's obviously no need to pay almost $200—Banana Republic and J. Crew both have versions for just $49.50.
