LA noise king John Wiese is one of experimental music's most prolific figures, with a discography around 200 releases deep, including both solo material and collaborations (with everyone from British free improviser Evan Parker to Ann Arbor nutjobs Wolf Eyes). One of his most productive and longest-running projects, Sissy Spacek, rumbles through town on Friday for a performance at the Viaduct Theater. Also on the bill are Illusion of Safety and the duo of Gerritt Wittmer and Paul Knowles.

Wiese doesn't seem much concerned with publicizing hard data on Sissy Spacek, so I can't say for sure who its current members are. But on most of the recordings I have he's joined by Danny McClain (electronics, drums) and Corydon Ronnau (guitar)—according to their MySpace page, the touring lineup includes Wiese, Ronnau, Amanda Warner (bass), and Jesse Jackson (guitar). There have been 40-some Sissy Spacek releases in all formats since the group formed in 1999, most of them produced in extremely limited numbers, and a few things seem constant on the ones I've heard. The group's aggressive music juggles pure power electronics and high-velocity thrash—most of it's deafeningly loud and abrasive, and the terse, jarring, disjointed pieces seem to revel in their instability. They lacerate ragged pileups of percussion with feedback, animalistic screams, and blasts of guitar noise, or intercut them with unexpected samples—audio from a live performance by the Gossip occupies most of a track called "Jason's Basement (The Gossip)" from the recent Sissy Spacek anthology Gore Jet (Helicopter).

In the 2007 video footage below, Sissy Spacek are in a more, um, contemplative mood:

Today's playlist:
