In this week's issue Andrea Gronvall reviews the German mountaineering adventure North Face, about the 1936 attempt of two Germans and two Austrians to scale the Eiger in the Swiss Alps. The movie screens all week at Music Box. We also have a roundup of this week's Peace on Earth Film Festival at Chicago Cultural Center.

Among this week's new capsule reviews: Kevin Smith's stultifying Cop Out, starring Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan; the French action flick District 13: Ultimatum, scripted by the prolific Luc Besson; Roman Polanski's latest release (but not the kind he'd like), The Ghost Writer, with Ewan McGregor and Pierce Brosnan; the flatly insane 1977 Japanese horror item House; the British drama Unmade Beds; the 1964 black comedy The Visit, starring Ingrid Bergman; and the French period drama The Wedding Song, about the increasingly strained friendship between a Jewish woman and a Muslim woman in Nazi-occupied Tunisia.

This week's revivals include Fritz Lang's Clash by Night (1952), screening as a weekend matinee at Music Box; David Cronenberg's eXistenZ (1999), showing next Wednesday at Doc Films; John Ford's The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962), showing next Thursday at Doc; and Louis Malle's Vanya on 42nd Street (1994), screening Sunday afternoon and Wednesday night at Gene Siskel Film Center.

Some other notable events: Reader contributor Fred Camper introduces a screening of shorts by Beat filmmaker Christopher Maclaine at Doc Films on Tuesday night, and University of Chicago Film Studies Center presents a symposium on cinema and new media, Material and Code, on Friday and Saturday.
