By now the presence of the Mexican candy chain Dulcelandia should be a pretty familiar sight around town, and if you've so far been able to resist this one-stop shop for sugar skulls, piñatas, and chicken-shaped lollipops, well then, what's holding you back? Culturally specific sweet shops such as Chinatown's Aji Ichiban are welcome indicators that even as Chicago's once dominant candy industry decamps to foreign lands, nobody says we don't have a curious and ravenous appetite for imported confectionery. The way things have been going I wouldn't at all be surprised one day soon to run across a Kyrgyz Honeydukes. Even Ukrainians and Russians just got their own candy store.

Nuts 2 You, the second outpost of a four-year-old Buffalo Grove emporium, just opened a few weeks ago in Ukrainian Village. In addition to offering literally tons of bulk dried fruits, chocolate, and nuts (enrobed and not), there's a brain-twisting assortment of bright and shiny wrapped eastern European candies. I picked up a couple pounds (at $5.79 per), which mostly turned out to consist of chocolate-enrobed wafers, nougats, marshmallows, and fudges. The packaging, often bearing pastoral scenes featuring milkmaids, giants, and other jolly creatures, offers the non-Cyrillic reader many opportunities for suspense-ridden sugar shock. Anthropomorphic bears seem particularly popular.
