Chicago Tribune, November 11, 1913. I mourn this lost Chicago, where a well-read, shotgun-wielding spinster lady could squat on, farm, and defend the boundaries of her south-side river island for a decade before attracting the attention of the authorities.

Curse you, John Law, and your lying, deceiving ways!
Oh damn you, federal government, and your meddling, river-dredging ways.
A “blind pig,” for those who don’t know, is an unlicensed drinking establishment. I guess you could argue that our Lilian should have taken a live-and-let-live approach rather than rat out her nearest neighbor to the bluenoses, but then you probably don’t live next to a blind pig.
Anyway, there's a lovely Captain Nemo/Huck Finn/Swiss Family Robinson vibe to Lillian's homestead scene, with the goat and the garden and the library in her cabin. I hope her next living situation, whatever it was, didn't get on her feisty nerves too badly.
