Over at Sociological Images, there's an interesting post about Verizon's ads for the vaunted new Droid phone: Should a phone be masculine or feminine?

But what really threw me about the ad was this:

Or should [a phone] be fast... racehorse duct-taped to a Scud missile fast? We say the latter.

Emphasis mine. I know that Scud has a good, hard sound that resonates well with duct and the aggro tone of the ad, but for people who grew up during the Gulf War, it resonates with destruction and terror, not to mention the Russkies and Saddam Hussein simultaneously.

And for those of us who were really paying attention to news coverage during the Gulf War, it resonates with failure and bad industrial design, too:

"It was structurally unstable and often broke up in the upper atmosphere. That further reduced its already poor accuracy, but it also made the missile difficult to intercept, since its flight path was unpredictable."

Too soon? Or just too stupid?
