"At heart, one of the things that makes us our need to change things," says one of the paper artists profiled in Vanessa Gould's documentary Between the Folds. "It's also the heart of the appeal of origami, exploring the surprising magic of just how far you can change that square."

Between the Folds screens Saturday 11/28 at 2 PM at the Chicago Cultural Center.

The film explores not only aesthetics, but also the scientific applications of the ancient Japanese art, which is employed, for instance, for molecular modeling in pharmaceutical manufacture.

Jean Mishima, president of the Chicago Japanese American Historical Society, leads a paper folding workshop after the screening.

It's Saturday 11/28 at 2 PM at the Chicago Cultural Center's Claudia Cassidy Theater, 78 E. Washington.
