Kidz in the Hall Get Grizzled, Matt & Kim Get Ninja-fied

Ever since I wrote a column on so-called "hipster rap" I've betting the occasional e-mail from journalism students looking for quotes or background for their own pieces on the phenomenon. I got one the other day that actually started me thinking. Given that Jay-Z's rapping over samples of Justice and M.I.A. and Wale's putting out a record with a Lady Gaga cameo rubbing up against collabos with Dave Sitek from TV on the Radio, what qualifies as hipster rap anymore? Because simply digging some of the same music as skinny-pantsed white kids obviously doesn't quite separate a rapper from the rest of the pack these days.

Kidz in the Hall frequently get lumped in with the hipster-rap thing, but I feel like the tag's never fit them too well. Those who beg to differ might offer this track sampling Grizzly Bear's "Two Weeks" as evidence, but given that Jay's taking Beyonce out to Grizzly Bear shows, I'm not sure the band still counts as hipster music. Even though he's into MGMT and Empire of the Sun, I sort of feel like Jay-Z is pretty much the antithesis of hipster.

On the other hand, this Ninjasonik refit of Matt & Kim's "Daylight" probably counts:

Either way, I'm just glad that the days are over when "I've got a Coldplay CD in the Range" was all a rapper had to say to prove the breadth of his taste.
