Washington, Atlanta Gay Papers to Close

Our sister papers in Atlanta and DC are reporting that the Washington Blade and the Southern Voice are both closing this week.

Queerty (which has one of the all-time great mottos) has a good roundup - it's a bit confusing, but it seems the federal government's Small Business Association lent approximately $40 million (there's that number again) to an equity fund controlled by the owner of Window Media, which publishes the two papers and a host of other gay papers. So DC and Atlanta aren't the only cities that will be losing gay papers as a result of the liquidation.

I'm embarrassed to say I'm unfamiliar with the SoVo, but the Blade is an institution; here's a scan of the 1969 newsletter, the Gay Blade that evolved into the current paper.
