Longtime pals Matt Groening and Lynda Barry participated in a Chicago Humanities Festival event at UIC, which CHF marketing and communications associate director Jara Kern says drew the largest single festival turnout ever.

I don't know if the auditorium at Parker can hold that kind of turnout, but tomorrow the two will return for a CHF panel discussion moderated by the Reader's Michael Miner.

They'll be joined by fellow cartoonists Jules Feiffer and Chris Ware to consider what the CHF program states is "the most significant crisis in the medium’s history: the evaporation of virtually all of their outlets as alternative newsweeklies and comix publishers cease publishing their work in the midst of their own financial calamity."

The Reader was an early adopter of Groening and Barry, and we ran Ware's comic till his other work got in the way. We do have less space for comics than we used to, but we haven't dropped them, though Groening doesn't appear weekly anymore and Barry has semiretired her Ernie Pook's Comeek.

The panel discussion, "The Not-So-Funny Situation of Alternative Comix," is Saturday, November 7, 4:30 PM, at the Francis W. Parker School, 2233 N Clark; $10 at the door, $5 in advance. Get advance tickets here.
