Film Festival Announces Award Winners

On Saturday the Chicago International Film Festival handed out its annual awards. The envelope, please . . .

The Gold Hugo for best film went to Mississippi Damned, Tina Mabry's autobiographical drama about three children weighed down by poverty and abuse in the Deep South of the 1980s and '90s. The Special Jury Award went to Fish Tank, the story of a teenage girl trapped in an English housing project, directed by Andrea Arnold (Red Road). Marco Bellochio won the Best Director award, Giovanna Mezzogiorno the Best Actress award, and Filippo Timi the Best Actor award for Vincere, about the early years of Benito Mussolini.

Awards also went to Jossie Harris Thacker (supporting actress, Mississippi Damned),Michael Fassbender (supporting actor, Fish Tank), Tina Mabry (screenplay, Mississippi Damned), and to the Russian drama Hipsters (art direction). A complete list of the award winners appears here.
