Matt Taibbi has a compelling take on Obama's win, though the obvious exception that may or may not prove the rule to this...

"You never, ever get a true dissident from a prominent Western country winning the award, despite the obvious appropriateness such a choice would represent"

... is MLK, though arguments could be made for Alva Myrdal, Norman Borlaug, former Nation editor Emily Green Balch (midcentury American pacifists - pretty dissident IMO), Carl von Ossietzky (can't we start giving it to journalists again?), and of course Jane Addams.
