At the close of Fashion Week, let's check in with some of Michelle Obama's favorite designers, shall we?

Jason Wu, who was catapulted to stardom when the First Lady wore one of his dresses on inauguration night, showed pretty, deceptively simple pieces that had a 1940s air—lots of shirtwaist dresses and cinched waists for everyday, with prints keeping things fresh. For dressier pieces, he was partial to tulip skirts—a surprisingly wearable silhouette-and ruffly details around the neckline.

Zero + Maria Cornejo is always aggressively forward-looking. This season Cornejo generally ignored the focus on the waist in favor of slouchy pantsuits, blousy tops, and asymmetrical details in a mostly black-and-white palette. I could see Obama pulling off a few of these looks, but presumably she will not be rocking a bandeau top when meeting world leaders.

Chicago's own Maria Pinto, showing at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week for the first time, balanced on the fence between romantic and assertive—lots of feminine details like rosettes and tiers (and wild maenad hairdos on the models), but she also showed a tailored gray power suit and a yellow floral coatdress with sharp, pointy shoulders. The collection had the effect of highlighting a common conundrum for women—whether to be pretty or powerful. It's still hard to be both, but Obama's the poster child for pulling it off.
