"An example of how genuine feelings and style can be extracted from the cheapest film if the director cares."

That's how New York critic and professor William K. Everson described Frank Wisbar's 1946 Strangler of the Swamp, part of a double bill of B-movies screening Monday 9/14 as part of Sonotheque music director Joe Bryl's tribute to Everson.

Charles Middleton, best known as Ming the Merciless from Flash Gordon serials, plays the titular vengeful specter, in what Everson called a rare instance for the time of a "serious ghost story."

Rounding out the second half of the bill is Robert Florey's 1936 studio lot killer thriller The Preview Murder Mystery. Both films clock in just at or under the one hour mark.

Strangler of the Swamp and The Preview Murder Mystery play as part of the monthly Cinematheque Sonotheque screening series. Doors at 6 PM, screenings at 6:30. No cover. 21+. At Sonotheque, 1444 W. Chicago.
