The Future of Arts Journalism Will Not Be Announced—Yet

The National Summit on Arts Journalism (the subject of my recent column) announced today that five winning projects have been selected in the the Future of Arts Journalism contest—but they're not gonna tell us who the winners are.

According to a statement on the summit Web site, contest officials have decided to wait until the summit itself, October 2 (at the University of Southern California's Annenberg School for Communication and online), to reveal which of the 109 entries they chose. That way, they say, they can put the news in "the proper context," and "present the case" for their selections. Winners were notified by phone earlier today; neither of Chicago's two entries, the Goodman Theatre's Cindy Bandle Young Critics Mentoring Program (a long shot, given the contest's goals) and the Bad at Sports visual arts podcast, got the call. The statement also noted that no single clear pattern for the future emerged from the entries, and that viable business plans, one of the contest's main stipulations, were in very short supply.
