In a story about the upcoming movie The September Issue, a documentary about the making of Vogue's phonebooklike fall fashion preview in 2007 (its biggest issue ever, as it turned out), Sunday's New York Times shines the spotlight on Grace Coddington, the magazine's creative director.

Although she's not a household name like her colleague Anna Wintour, Coddington's played a big role in shaping the magazine into America's fashion bible, and to readers her flowing red curls as are iconic as Wintour's sunglasses and bob. Her sparring with Wintour about photo shoots and layouts is also legendary—and all apparently for the good of the publication, not just a clash of egos. As Coddington said back in 2003, "We argue like crazy, but I think she respects me, and I certainly respect her."

Although the movie shows the inner workings of the magazine, it may end up being a glimpse inside a world that has already vanished forever, as not even Conde Nast is immune to the earth-shaking changes in the publishing industry.
