Lollapalooza: Freedom Dancers and Also the Regular Kind

It wasn't till I started putting together a custom schedule in the surprisingly handy Lollapalooza iPhone app that I realized how much dance music there is in this year's lineup—and it's not just limited to the dedicated Perry's stage either.

Sound Tribe Sector 9's ravey jamming doesn't really do much for me, and neither does Thievery Corporation's studied eclecticism, but they both turned the crowd at the Chicago 2016 stage—one of the two main anchor stages—into a mass of happily writhing bodies.

Crystal Castles' set on one of the medium-size stages was unexpectedly popular, despite being plagued by technical difficulties. (Another pleasant surprise: despite the sound problems, the band didn't throw a tantrum and storm off—though I hear Alice Glass may have punched a dude in the crowd who tried to take her mike.)

Perry's has been packed all day. The frequent breakdowns in A-Trak's set had hands in the air by probably the high hundreds. Even without sticking to the dance-music-only stage you could go the whole festival without hearing a live guitar. Which actually sounds kinda nice.
