The No-Pander Zone

You gotta love Fourth Ward alderman Toni Preckwinkle.

True, I think she's wasting her intellect and integrity on supporting Chicago's Olympic bid, thus giving Mayor Daley perhaps his only shred of credibility on the subject.

But she really is one of Chicago's great political characters.

During last night's meeting at Olivet Baptist Church to discuss the potential impact of the Games on her ward, she was in fine form: officious, direct, a tad curt yet still polite.

My favorite moment came when one resident asked her to create permit parking along King Drive.

"Permit parking is not an option," Preckwinkle declared.

She went on to explain that she has a philosophical opposition to assigning exclusive control of a public street to a private group, even if it's made of up people who live there. What's more, she explained, she practices what she preaches: she lives near a hospital where on-street parking is hard to find. "But I knew that when I moved there," she said.

A few minutes later, another resident revived the request for permit parking.

Preckwinkle looked her dead in the eye and said: "I don't believe in permit parking."

"But that's what you believe," the resident replied. "We're talking about the residents."

"For better or worse, I'm your elected representative."

In other words, if you want permit parking, elect someone else.

Hey, at least she's honest.
